Remodelling the pool area

(as the slideshow contains about 170 pictures the loading of the page might take a bit longer)

When we bought our house in 2008 the pool just had been resurfaced 4 years ago, i.e. everything was ok.

Usually a pool surface lasts for about 12 to 15 years. Ours was starting to become spotty and cloudy after 8 to 9 years. As we did not like the stamped concrete deck around the pool and Maria had been asking for a hot tub for a long time we thought in 2017 that the pool area was ready for a complete overhaul:

  • Pool at the time of sale in 2008
  • 2016 the surface became cloudier ...
  • ... and more spots appeared
  • For the extension of the pool system ...
  • ... and the new poolheater ...
  • ... Juergen had ...
  • ... to put down ...
  • ... a new concrete slab ...
  • ... beside the pool control.
  • Starting the work at the skimmer
  • OMG! ...
  • ... Where there should have been concrete ...
  • ... there is sand only. ...
  • ... No wonder we lost so much water!
  • Casing and ...
  • ... refilling the concrete at the skimmer overflow
  • Demolishing the old ladder
  • No sign of electrical grounding in these holes!
  • The new ladder will have 4 steps
  • The old rail
  • ... was fixed in these holes ...
  • ... within these completely corroded mounts
  • Beside the skimmer a small side pipe for our manatee water feature
  • Planning of the pool equipment
  • Prepared pipes for the waterflow to/from the whirlpool ....
  • ... and the blower used for the air vents ...
  • ... are laid down ...
  • ... where they will be installed ...
  • ... later.
  • The blower pipe ...
  • ... is in the ground already.
  • More pipe chaos on the lawn ...
  • ... and beside the poolfilter
  • The new poolheater has arrived, too!
  • These three pipes will connect to the whirlpool later
  • The pool is being emptied, ...
  • ... unfortunately into the middle of our lawn, ...
  • ... which does not like ...
  • ... the saltwater at all, ...
  • ... ending in the canal.
  • In the end even two pumps are in use.
  • Nearly empty!
  • The last bit should empty through the drain if we could get the plug out!
  • The pool light will be replaced as well
  • OMG! The old surface ...
  • ... is really damaged and ...
  • ... has to be removed!
  • The extension of the pool system ...
  • ... with its 100k pipes is taking shape.
  • Pipe work
  • The new skimmer has arrived, ...
  • ... but it needs a little bit of fine tuning, ...
  • ... till it fits.
  • Fortunately the representative for work security did not see where he is wearing the protective goggles! Lol!
  • The demolition work ...
  • ... needed more ...
  • ... effort and ...
  • ... was bigger ...
  • ... than ...
  • ... expected and ...
  • ... planned for originally.
  • Just look at this mountain of rubble.
  • There was not a lot left ...
  • ... of the ...
  • ... original pool surface!
  • The stairs ...
  • ... were even worse!
  • Later the rubble is shoveled into buckets ...
  • ... and transported by wheelbarrow ...
  • ... to the trailer in front of the house.
  • Meanwhile ...
  • ... Juergen continues ...
  • ... the work ...
  • ... on his ...
  • ... 100k ...
  • ... pipes.
  • Who has buried a submarine in our garden?!
  • The protective shed around ...
  • ... the pool system is extended.
  • Now, after the old surface has been removed, i.e. there is not any risk of flying debris, ...
  • ... Juergen can start ...
  • ... to install the new skimmer, ...
  • ... without risk to him or the skimmer ...
  • ... which needs to be set into concrete.
  • For further protection he puts a board on top.
  • Juergen has developped an automatic water refilling system ...
  • ... which has been installed at this place.
  • After installing all waterpipes the next step is the electrical work on the pool control.
  • The coping material has been delivered ...
  • ... but after the demolition the edge is very uneven.
  • It has to be ...
  • ... filled with concrete ...
  • ... and ...
  • ... levelled.
  • Now the guys can start ...
  • ... to lay ...
  • ... the coping.
  • Next step: ...
  • ... laying the edge tiles.
  • Tiles around the edge
  • Preparation of the pool surface: 1. primer, ...
  • ... 2. filling the holes and/or ...
  • ... levelling the rough surface with sprayed concrete, ...
  • ... 3. filling ...
  • ... and/or mending ...
  • ... the extremely ...
  • ... damaged stairs, followed ...
  • ... by ...
  • ... 4. smoothening the step surface, ...
  • ... done!
  • That's much better!
  • The mounts for the new ladder are grounded...
  • ... same for the hand rail. They are just being put in.
  • But before the new surface is sprayed on ...
  • ... tiles and coping are wrapped in tarp for protection.
  • These are the trucks with ...
  • ... the pebbletec material for the surface.
  • Here you can see how it is mixed.
  • Rubber boots on spikes ...
  • ... and other tools
  • Starting with the stairs ...
  • ... pebbletec is sprayed on ...
  • ... and then smoothed ...
  • ... upto the drain in the middle ...
  • ... continuously.
  • In the next step the blue concrete ...
  • ... is washed off ...
  • ... until you can see ...
  • ... the little pebbles underneath.
  • Watch, all cables and hoses ...
  • ... are hung up to avoid damages ...
  • ... to the new soft surface.
  • Now you can see why the rubber boots have spikes.
  • The protective tarp may be removed now ...
  • ... and little bits of plaster are washed off.
  • The last bits of work around the drain ...
  • ... are being finished and ...
  • ... the first phase of the work ...
  • ... on the surface is done.
  • Installing ...
  • ... the hand rail, ...
  • ... it needs to be secured first, and
  • ... then the same has to be done ...
  • ... with the ladder.
  • The new drainage cover filled with pebbletec
  • On the next day ...
  • ... the surface is washed down with an acid solution, ...
  • ... and that's how our new pool surface looks while still dry.
  • And then the call: "Bring on the water!", ...
  • ... until the pool is full.
  • The first visitors ...
  • ... have arrived!
  • The greenish tinge is caused by the Cape Coral water. But after using the right chemicals everything is fine.
  • Maria could not wait to give it a try, of course!
  • After a long wait ....
  • ... the pavers have arrived at last!
  • First ...
  • ... the sand base ...
  • ... has to be distributed evenly.
  • We expect the worst: a flex without water cooling!
  • Part of the pavers are done already
  • Laying pavers in steps
  • Marking the cutting edge: ...
  • ... one pattern away parallel to the pool edge ...
  • ... the pavers are cut causing a dust cloud ...
  • ... and then laid down ...
  • ... where they are supposed to go ...
  • ... around the coping.
  • Fortunately our shutters ...
  • ... kept most of the concrete dust out of the house, ...
  • ... but the screen looked really bad!
  • Poor Juergen had to pessure wash ...
  • ... the whole screen!
  • But the result was worth the whole hussle!
